The purrfect fence is 99.99% effective due to 20 years of research into cat containment and the use Purrfect Fence’s patented spring-loaded arm. In those situations where escapes are reported we worked with the cat parent to address the root cause of the escape 100% of the time. Often times, this is due to a mistake during installation, environmental issues such as trees, window sills next to the fence, or other common yard features assisting in the escape such as furniture.

Even so, our incredible track record is due to several factors, but most importantly to the flexible/unstable nature of the polypropylene grid, the arched top, and the chew resistant bottom that gets overlapped 6" onto the ground. For the handful of expert climbers that might be able to make it near the top of the fence, they will then be denied escape due to the effectiveness of the pivoting extender arms that turn your cat(s) back toward the ground. Having said this, installation technique is still very important because any small opening can be a potential escape route for a cat. It is important that our written and video instructions are followed.

To our knowledge we have never heard of any animals getting tangled in any manner in our system. Birds are typically able to see the material well enough to not fly into it. The fence material is flexible but is not prone to tangling due to its large mesh size (almost 2” x 2”) and overall sturdiness.

All of our fencing solutions are designed with the intention of keeping cats safely contained inside. This means that it is technically possible for an outside cat to enter the enclosure. However, in doing so they would become contained inside the enclosure, which most cats tend not to like and do not typically return after being removed or let out.

The only sure way to prevent outside cats from entering the enclosure is to also install spring-loaded arms facing outward to create a “Y” shaped top. This is most easily accomplished with the Freestanding Fence as it may not require arms to be installed on a shared fence line and overhang into a neighboring yard.

This also means that if your sole intention is to prevent cats from entering an area, the fence can be installed with arms facing outward only.

Freestanding Cat Fence:
The height of the Freestanding Fence System is adjustable between 6-7 ft and is considered semi-permanent because posts are not set in concrete. Because of this, the Freestanding Fence will meet most zoning ordinances. However, we always recommend checking with your local municipality if you have concerns.

The posts are inserted into ground-driven sleeves rather than held in place with concrete. These sleeves will go into the ground approximately 22”. If you have buried electric or gas lines in or near the fenced area, you may consider contacting your local utility provider to locate the lines before installing the fence.

Existing Fence Conversion System:
The height of the Existing Fence Conversion System is dependent on the height of your existing fence and can be adjusted by simply mounting the system at an appropriate height. However, we do not recommend a finished height of less than 6 ft. The system is considered semi-permanent because it can be easily removed from the fence if needed. However, always recommend checking with your local municipality if you have concerns.

Strength and longevity were major considerations when we specified the materials to be used for our escape-proof and patented cat fence systems. The support structure (posts, ground sleeves, spring-loaded arms, and gates) are all galvanized steel and all of these parts are also powder coated black except for the sleeve (component that is installed in the ground to hold the fence posts.) The mesh fence material is UV stabilized polypropylene that has proven to last well over a decade in the deer fence industry. The mesh for our Purrfect Fence systems can easily be replaced if need be. We commonly have customers that have had our system for 15 years or more and still in use. With minimal maintenance, the Purrfect Fence systems can last well beyond that by replacing individual components on an as-needed basis.

We recommend when planning and measuring your layout to take trees into consideration. This system should be placed at least 6-12 inches in front of any trees so that they are excluded from the cat enclosure. This is generally more easily accomplished with a Freestanding Fence System where placement is more flexible. If a tree must be within the enclosed area, we recommend that the Purrfect Fence is at least 6 ft away from the tree (measured from the tip of the arm). Again, this is easier to accomplish with a Freestanding Fence system. However, if a tree must be inside the enclosure area and is closer than 6 ft to the Purrfect Fence, there are different ways of preventing a tree from becoming an escape route for cats. The best method depends on the tree and the specific location within the enclosure. Damage to the spring-loaded arms and posts due to weather is a rare occurrence, but it can happen if the right amount of snowfall and right temperature mix during extreme situations such as fast falling heavy wet (saturated) snowfall, ice storms and also in hurricane-force winds. If you see heavy snow accumulating on your fence, it would be beneficial to remove the snow. This would lessen the chances of extreme snow weight potentially damaging the fence. We understand that extreme weather situations DO occur, and are committed to keeping our customers (both human and feline) safe and happy. For this reason, if you do experience damage due to extreme weather, Purrfect Fence will offer replacement parts at a discounted rate. In order to qualify for the program, you will need to provide digital or standard photographs of the damage. The photos will be reviewed and a discounted cost will be determined on a case-by-case basis with respect to the amount and severity of damage.

Although our fencing systems can be a deterrent, it is possible for other animals to enter the enclosure area. Generally speaking, raccoons, opossums, and other nuisance animals are able to enter and exit without issue. But we have found that they will typically only enter if there is something inside the enclosure that is of interest to them (food, water, shelter, etc.) since it can be a time-consuming task to get in and out. So proper preparation of the enclosure accompanied by our fencing tends to be a great solution to keeping those animals out.

Squirrels are excellent climbers and should be able to easily enter and exit the enclosure area without a problem. They are not usually heavy enough to activate the spring-loaded arm.

Purrfect Fence has been providing enclosures that keep cats safe outside for more than 15 years. We estimate that we have more than 60,000 cats inside our enclosures across the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. In this time we have never once been made aware of a situation that resulted in a cat being harmed by a predator while inside our enclosures. These amazing results suggest that our fencing system serves as both a visual and physical deterrent. The flexible mesh material is very difficult, if not impossible to climb for any would-be ground predator. Some of the animal experts we have consulted with tell us that because the fence materials and configuration are so unlike anything an animal would have encountered before they will tend to stay away.

Coyotes in partiular tend to be opportunistic hunters. This means that they prefer to sneak up on potential prey rather than hunt it down. While it is possible for a coyote to eentually "break in" to the cat enclosure, it would be a rather time consuming task and the cat(s) inside would surely be aware and able to run back inside or find place to hide. Without any reason in sight for the coyote to attempt the time-consuming break in, they will generally walk away.

Though we did not necessarily design our system to handle all of the different types of threats, we are very proud of our track record of keeping cats safe regardless of the situation!

We have had many customers utilize our fencing systems in communities with HOAs!

In order to be the most effective, the system should be installed at a height of at least 6 ft and is considered semi-permanent because it can easily be removed if needed. Depending on your particular layout, you may need to secure some small components directly to the home.

However, rules and regulations of what is acceptable are often up to the individual HOA so it is important to check with your association prior to purchasing the fence to ensure that you are able to install it.

The spring-loaded arm design has been used by Purrfect Fence for several years. All of our cat fence systems are designed to be installed at a height that does not allow a cat to simply jump on top of or over the spring-loaded arm. In order for the fence to be most effective, the finished height (measured from the ground or leaping surface up to the tip of the arm) should be at least 6 ft, although we recommend installing even higher for larger, more athletic cats.

At this height, the average cat is forced to climb in order to attempt escape. As the cat climbs along the Purrfect Fence spring-loaded arm, it must turn its back to the ground to climb out toward the tip of the arm. As the cat approaches the spring-joint, its weight will cause the tip of the arm to drop quickly. This motion  imitates the feeling of falling and triggers the cat’s righting reflex - a natural instinct that allows cats to land on their feet. In order to land safely on the ground below, the cat must let go of the Purrfect Fence in order to turn over.

It is possible to expand your enclosure in the future by reconfiguring and/or adding additional kits to your fence layout. Depending on your chosen system and the new configuration, you may find that you need to purchase replacement mesh material.

Although our systems are primarily designed to enclose a yard or cat-proof existing fencing, it might be possible to use the components to secure a balcony/deck/patio space. Because these types of spaces tend to be compact, we recommend contacting our team to see what is possible for your balcony/deck/patio!

The amount of fencing that you will need to create a cat-safe enclosure will depend on the size of the enclosure you’d like to create, or the length of your existing fence. We recommend measuring the perimeter of your proposed enclosure to get an idea of the total length of fencing you need.Kits are offered in various lengths (in increments of 50 ft) and should correspond to the total length of fencing you need to cover. In order to determine the length that you require we recommend measuring your fence line to get the total “linear feet” of fencing that you have. Freestanding Cat Fence System:Freestanding Fence Kits will include all of the materials and components for assembling the fence. Some basic tools are included with the kit, but you will also need a few common hand tools including a heavy hammer or sledgehammer, a framing hammer or mallet, an electric drill, and a pair of heavy-duty snips, for example.

We can certainly provide you with any mesh/netting that you require. We have 3 different sizes of poly mesh available depending on the Purrfect Fence System you have (4 ft tall, 6 ft tall, and 7.5 ft tall). It is available in various lengths in increments of 10 ft. Unfortunately, it is not currently available for purchase directly through the website, but our team is happy to put together a quote for you! It is possible for our team to create a semi-custom kit for less than 50 feet or for an in-between size. However, in many cases, we find that most customers with lengths in between kit sizes still tend to need all or most of the components of the larger kit size that they are in between. The great thing about our system is that you do not need to dig post holes or pour concrete or cement. The sleeves included in the Freestanding Fence kits hold the poles in the ground. They are 2 feet long and only about two inches is left above ground. They are simply driven into the ground with a sledgehammer.

When dealing with sloping ground you are going to want to keep some things in mind. The first is that you will need a post at each drastic change in slope. This may require that you purchase extra post sets. You will also need to cut the fence at each change in slope and re-attach it to the post to keep the fencing material parallel to the ground, thus keeping the fence height at 6’ feet or higher.

We sell a variety of tools that may be helpful for your installation, but most are not absolutly necessary (or you may already own them!):

• The Zip Tie Tool is a fantastic device for quickly tightening and cutting zip ties. The tool uses a hand-held gripper which is squeezed to tighten and then cut a zip tie.
• The Hog Ringer Tool is a specialty stapler that will assist with securing the upper poly mesh and lower welded wire mesh together / securing the bottom edge of the fence material to your chain link fence, saving significant time (and hand fatigue!).
• String helps with creating a level and straight installation plane to ensure your fence is installed in its desired position.
• A Level keeps posts vertically straight.
• Heavy-Duty Snips are used for cutting both the upper poly mesh and the lower welded wire Chew/Dig guard.

We offer all of these tools in an installation kit for purchase if interested.

The bottom portion is welded wire, which is very durable. It is not only a chew guard and protection from predators, but is also durable enough for lawn maintenance. The stakes that go every two feet to hold the wire close to the ground should be low enough to avoid lawn mower blades. Grass will grow right through that portion of the fence. We recommend making lawn services aware that it is there and to use caution. Weed trimmers can be used along the bottom of the fence but a nylon cord must be used and it is recommended that weed trimmers are run at lower rpm's and with care while trimming around the fence.

Our kits come with four “post-to-wall” and two “arch-to-wall” mounts. Posts should be as close to the side of a building as possible to minimize any gaps. Please remember this is when abutting a wall not running along side it. If you are unable to drive the sleeve into the ground (due to concrete or pavement, etc) you may need to trim the pole to the proper height.

Overview of Arm Placement:

It is possible to utilize our Freestanding Fence to contain both cats and dogs. Safely containing cats tends to be more dynamic compared to dogs, so the spring-loaded arm adds an extra layer of security for cats. The arm will create an arched extension at the top of the fence that can be used to prevent most dogs from jumping or climbing over your fence as well.

The poly fence material itself was originally designed for deer exclusion including handling a deer impact. How well it works with dogs very much depends on the dog. Even large breed dogs would be hard-pressed to breach the fence with a full speed impact but aggressive chewers and diggers may be able to damage the fence or form points of escape for cats.

For extra strength and durability for larger dogs, or dogs that might test the fence, you may consider installing your posts closer together (which may require purchasing additional posts), or upgrading to a taller welded wire chew/dig barrier.

It is recommended that Freestanding Fence Posts are spaced no greater than 14 ft apart, but they can certainly be spaced closer if necessary.

The Freestanding Fence System can be installed over concrete surfaces. Depending on your particular layout or configuration, this may require using special hardware to secure the posts and/or Chew/Dig Guard directly to the surface of the concrete. We can provide this hardware if it is needed!

The Freestanding Fence posts will stand above ground about 6 ft. The arm height on the posts is technically adjustable by shifting the arm mounting coupler up or down the post to your desired height before securing it in place. If positioned at the very top of the post, the fence's finished height would be approximately 7 ft. We do not recommend setting the finished height lower than 6 ft, although it is possible to do so.

The Existing Fence Conversion System can be outfitted on most fences that are at least 3 feet tall. There are two versions of the Existing Fence Conversion System available.

Standard Existing Fence Conversion System:This option is designed to be installed at a height of at least 5 ft, so most fences that are 5+ feet tall will use this system.

Conversion System for Shorter Fences:This option uses the same spring-loaded arm as the standard version, but inludes extra components that allow the extension to reach higher vertically (up to 3 feet of added height). It is recommended for use on fences that are between 3 feet and 5 feet tall. However, this option can also be installed on taller fencing for extra height.

The idea behind the Existing Fence Conversion System is to cat-proof the top portion of an existing barrier that cats cannot get out of without scaling. Solid fence lines made of Wood, Vinyl, Brick, Concrete Block, Metal, PVC, etc. will all work as long as the existing fence creates true barrier in all ways but the top. If your cat does not have to climb your fence to get out of the fenced area, it is likely that adding the conversion kit will not have much of an effect (if they are leaving the yard by going underneath the fence, for example). If your cat can get through your fence we recommend that you use our Freestanding Cat Fence System to cat-proof an area within your existing fence.

Our Existing Fence Conversion Systems can be effectively installed on a wide range of fence types, including: Wood, Vinyl (PVC), Concrete Block, Brick, and Chain Link and more. If you are unsure if the system can be attached to your existing fence, our team of experts is happy to help!

There are two versions of the Existing Fence Conversion System available.

Fasteners for securing the mounting plates to your existing fence are not included with our kits. This is primarily due to the fact that our system is designed to be installed on a wide range of fence types/materials, all of which require different types of fasteners. But the good news is that the types of fasteners we recommend are all common and easy to find at any home improvement store!

Wood Fence
Bugle-head wood screws are recommended to fit nicely into the holes of the mounting plate. #8 bugle-head 1-¾” to 2” long works well for 4x4 wooden posts.  When attaching to stringers (horizontal 2x3 or 2x4 wood supports) do not use screws longer than 1 ¾”.

Chain Link Fence
U-Bolts are recommended for most chain link fences. The size of the U-bolt is dependent on the size(s) of fence posts. In most cases, corners, endpoints, and gate posts are larger than other posts in the fence line. The mounting plate can be secured to a post up to 2-½” in diameter.

Alternative option: Self-tapping screws. These can be used for all mounting plates, or in areas where U-bolts might not fit due to fence hardware. #8 screw ½”-¾” long works well for most fences.

Metal Fence (aluminum, wrought iron, etc.) with Square Posts
Square U-Bolts can be used. The most common size is 2”.

Alternative option: Self-tapping screws. These can be used for all mounting plates, or in areas where U-bolts might not fit due to fence hardware. #8 screw ½”-¾” long works well for most fences.

Brick/Concrete Block
Masonry screws are recommended. If possible, the fastener locations should be aligned with a mortar joint (this allows for easier repair if the system is ever removed). Pre-drill a pilot hole to prevent damage to brick/block, then secure masonry fasteners through the mounting plate. 3/16” x 1-¼” long masonry screw (such as a Tapcon - link includes the correct drill bit) recommended.

Vinyl/PVC
Dependent on the specific fence. If the fence has a post backing (the material inside the posts) then the fastener type is determined by the backing material. However, most vinyl fences have hollow posts which require the addition of backing material for our system to be installed on the post, leading to a more involved installation process.

Mounting plates can also be secured directly to vinyl fence panels with through-bolts and washers.

The mounting plates used for the Existing Fence Conversion Systems are designed to accommodate a wide range of fastener types. The most common way the plate is secured to a chain link fence post is with U-bolts. On the sides of the mounting plate are two slots that are compatible with U-bolts.

The U-bolt will wrap around the chain link fence post, with the "prongs" going through the slots on the plate. Then, a washer and nuts are secured to each prong to tighten the U-bolt and set the plate in place on the post. The mounting plate can accommodate U-bolts for posts as large as 2.5" in diameter.

Vinyl is a bit more involved than outfitting other common fence types like wood or chain link. Vinyl is mostly designed to be decorative and therefore not engineered to be structural for the purposes of impact resistance. This is why most farm fencing, dog parks, etc use metal or wood fencing.

The bigger issue is mounting the extensions to your fence will put a lot of stress on your posts. These are usually hollow and not designed to hold that kind of weight. You will need to access the inside of your posts to determine if they are hollow, or if they already have a "backing" material. Do this by removing the cap of your vinyl fence post and examining what may be inside. In some cases, there may be a wood or metal post inside - we call this backing. But more commonly the posts are hollow. If you have a backing, then you will simply secure through the vinyl sleeve and into the backing.

If your posts are hollow, then you will need to install your own backing during installation. This is generally a 12-18" piece of 2x4 that will give the post more rigidity and also "spread" the load so that the extensions don't simply crack or rip out of the vinyl when any weight is applied. Lag bolts are generally used for securing the mounting brackets in this application. Although heavy standard wood screws/washers can also be utilized.

In some areas, such as corners or on gates, you may not be able to secure directly to a post. For these areas, we recommend using through-bolts and fender washers to attach the mounting plates to the fence panel instead:

The answer to this question depends on the type of wall you have. Bring a bracket to a hardware store you trust and describe the construction of your wall to a knowledgable worker, they should be able to guide you in the right direction.

For a corner between 90 degrees and 180 degrees:
We do not carry any special components or hardware for corners, as the standard components of the Existing Fence Conversion System can be used in corners. You will simply need to install the mounting plate in the corner, then position the spring-loaded arm at an angle to split the corner into two equal halves.

For corners greater than 180 degrees:
We do not carry any special components or hardware for corners, as the standard components of the Existing Fence Conversion System can be used in corners. However, corners that are greater than 180 degrees (inverted) do require additional spring-loaded arms to ensure the Purrfect Fence functions as expected in these areas. For corners that are between 180 and 270 degrees, you will need two arms. For corners between 270 and 360 degrees (uncommon) you will need three arms.

The mounting plate allows for up to three arms to be inserted at once, so you should not require more than one mounting plate for most configurations.

For corners less than 90 degrees:
If your fence has a corner that is less than 90 degrees, then you will need to “skip” that corner. This can be done by running the Purrfect Fence in front of the corner to create two “new” corners. Then the mesh is worked back into the existing fence corner so that no gaps exist. 

No special hardware or components are necessary for outfitting the majority of gates, but exactly how the gate is outfitted will depend on your specific gate's location, swing direction, and configuration.

There are 3 primary ways to handle the majority of gates:

• WOOD: The easiest way is staples applied with a staple gun for wood. Use staples that are a minimum of 3/8” long. 
  
• METAL / CHAIN LINK: Zip ties are usually used to secure the mesh material to the metal portion of the fence. Kits come with zip ties but you may want to consider ordering an extra bag of 100 for this purpose.
• PVC / VINYL:You have the option of running a strip of wood on the fence along where the mesh material meets the fence and staple to the wood strip. Alternatively, You may also use this product designed to secure the mesh material to a PVC /Vinyl fence.
• BRICK / BLOCK:Similarly to Vinyl and PVC, you can run a strip of wood on the fence along where the mesh material meets the fence and staple to the wood. Alternatively, You may also use this product designed to secure the mesh material to a PVC /Vinyl fence for Brick and Block as well.

It is possible to contain both cats and dogs with our Existing Fence Conversion Systems. Safely containing cats tends to be more dynamic compared to dogs, so the spring-loaded arm adds an extra layer of security for cats. The arm will create an arched extension at the top of your fence that can also be used to prevent most dogs from jumping or climbing over your fence as well.

It is recommended that spring-loaded arms are placed every 8-10 feet along an existing fence. For most fence configurations, this results in one arm on each fence post, as most fences are installed with a similar post spacing. However, arms can be spaced up to 14 ft apart if necessary.

We certainly do ship to Canada and we do so frequently! All of our items are available to you. We offer a special program for Canadian customers where we subsidize shipping costs. If your order qualifies for free shipping here in the USA, we look at the actual shipping cost for delivery to you in Canada and reduce that by the charges we would have incurred shipping the item for "free" here in the USA so you only pay a fraction of the actual shipping charges. We try to be as fair as possible so that you benefit from our promotions here in the USA as well.

We offer Free Shipping within the 48 contiguous United States on any fence kit purchase or any order over $299. Our pricing model is not one where we offer discounts or run sales periodically and keep inflated prices in the interim. Instead, we are always pricing as competitively as possible. Most of our customers cannot wait around for a sale because they have a problem that is happening now and we don't want to punish the customers who have unlucky timing. So, we simply price as best we can all the time to the benefit of everyone that needs our solutions.
